The Liberty Bell, the City of Brotherly Love, is one of the biggest swing states in national elections. What are we talking about? Pennsylvania, of course.
Pennsylvania is packed full of LGBTQ+ folks. It’s bookended by two big cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburg.
Affordability versus LGBTQ-friendliness, the next city in our series is the best gay city to live in Pennsylvania. Which is the most affordable, most LGBTQ+-friendly city in Pennsylvania?

Which city in Pennsylvania is the runner-up for the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city? Erie!
Why?
Erie is one of just four cities in Pennsylvania to score 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. Erie’s median and average incomes are slightly below average for the state at $50,000 and $62,000, respectively. Erie’s cost of living is slightly above average for Pennsylvania at 92.3%. Home values in Erie are in the top quartile for affordability averaging $172,000 per unit. Rents are also in the top quartile for affordability at $1,000 even a month.
Which city in Pennsylvania is the winner for the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city? Pittsburgh!
Why?
Pittsburgh is also one of four cities in Pennsylvania to score 100 on HRC’s MEI. The state’s median and average income are number two at $57,000 and $76,000, respectively. Pittsburgh’s cost of living is in the middle for Pennsylvania at 94.7%. Home values in Pittsburgh are slightly below average at $193,000 per unit. Rents are slightly above average at $1,330 a month.
What great traits about Pittsburgh make it great for queer people?
Well, Pittsburgh was the setting for Queer As Folk. Pittsburgh’s the home of Three Rivers and Three River Stadium, The Andy Warhol Museum, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Science Center. The Blue Moon bar is known as the “friendliest gay bar in Pittsburgh,” and Pittsburgh has an amazing riverfront with walkability, restaurants, shops, and bars.
