Affordability versus LGBTQ-friendliness, the next city in our series is the best gay city to live in South Dakota.  Which is the most affordable, most LGBTQ+-friendly city in South Dakota?

Which city in South Dakota is the runner-up for most affordably LGBTQ+-friendly? Vermillion!

Why? Vermillion comes in at #2 for the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index with 77/100 – the same as Laramie WY. 

Vermillions has the lowest cost of living in South Dakota at 80.2, which is the lowest of all South Dakota cities. It also has the lowest home values at $234,000 per unit. However, it comes in last for median income.

Why? It’s the only city in South Dakota with a 100 on HRC’s MEI. It has the second lowest cost of living at 84% of the national average. Home values come in at $257,000 per unit, making it #3 in the state. It’s #1 for rent affordability, at just over $1,100 per month.

What else makes Brookings SD great? It’s the home of South Dakota State University and home of college swimmer, homecoming king, and student body president of the University of South Dakota, Josh Sorbe. Brookings has a very active PFLAG group and an LGBTQ liaison office for the police department.
