Which city gets the top best gay city to live in South Carolina?

Affordability versus LGBTQ-friendliness, the next city in our series is the best gay city to live in South Dakota.  Which is the most affordable, most LGBTQ+-friendly city in South Carolina?

  1. Charleston
  2. Clemson
  3. Columbia
  4. Greenville
  5. Myrtle Beach
  6. North Charleston
  7. Rock Hill

Which city in South Carolina is the runner-up for most affordably LGBTQ+-friendly? Charleston! Why? Charleston comes in at #2 for the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index at 71 out of 100. It has the highest average income in South Carolina at $71,000 a year and the highest median income at $51,000 a year. However, it’s toward the bottom for housing and rent costs, meaning they’re expensive and keep Charleston from the top spot.

Which city in South Carolina is the winning city for most affordably LGBTQ+-friendly? Columbia, South Carolina’s capital city. Why? Rent is in the middle for the state at $1,463 a month. Home values are on the lower end for South Carolina at $227,000 per unit. Columbia’s cost of living is in the middle for the state at 84.5% of the national average.

The median income for Columbia is toward the high end at $49,000. The average income is in the middle at $61,000 a year. Columbia’s earned the top spot in the state for HRC’s MEI but at 77/100. Other great things about Columbia include that it’s the home of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. It has a vibrant art scene and great shopping, restaurants, and walking in Five Points. The Capital Club is one of the longest-running gay bars in the Southeast and the oldest in Columbia Columbia’s first Pride was in 1989, which is quite surprising for a southern city. Its 2023 Pride will be in October, with the specific date to be determined.
