What’s the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly City in North Carolina? Let’s find out.

Which North Carolina city is the runner-up for most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly? Carborro, a suburb of Chapel Hill. To be fair, Chapel Hill was a close runner-up and also has a 100 HRC’s MEI. Why? Carrboro is one out of three cities in North Carolina with a 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. It also has the second highest cost of living at 134.5% and the highest rents and home values at $1,575 a month and $400,000, respectively, which kept it from the top spot.  Carborro is tied for third when it comes to incomes, with median incomes at $57,000 a year and average incomes at $81,000 a year.

Which North Carolina city is the winner for most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly? Greensboro! Why? Rents are the second lowest in the state at $1,395 a month, and home values are the third lowest averaging $236,000. The cost of living is the third lowest in the state at 91.6%. Incomes are second from bottom, with median incomes at $46,000 and average incomes at $62,000 a year. What are some great things about Greensboro? Greensboro is the third most populous city in North Carolina and part of the ‘Piedmont Triad’, including High Point and Winston-Salem. It’s midway between mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, with beaches only about three hours away. Greensboro is the home of seven colleges, making the gay nightlife college-oriented.  Overall, Greensboro is a quiet, accepting, and creative culture. Its main industries are furniture and textiles. It hosts First Fridays and is home to both the Carolina Theater and the Community Theater of Greensboro. With all its art and culture, it also hosts many microbreweries.

In January 2021, Greensboro passed an ordinance explicitly safeguarding LGBTQ+ individuals from prejudice based on sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation. This makes Greensboro one of five North Carolina communities to include such protections and finally gave Greensboro a 100 on HRC’s MEI.

Congratulations, Carborro and Greensboro!
