Which city gets the top best gay city to live in Oklahoma?

One of the interesting things about Oklahoma, similar to Vermont, Washington, and some other states, is that there’s a large concentration of Human Rights Campaign ranked cities for its Municipal Equality index are all in one area – the Oklahoma City metro area. Oklahoma is the first state in our analysis to have every single city with a cost of living under 100% or below the national average.

Which Oklahoma city is the runner-up for the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly city? Tulsa! Tulsa’s the home of Black Wall Street, which is currently being revived. Learn more about the history and violence of Tulsa and the Tulsa Massacre on Queer Money® podcast episode #249.

Why is Tulsa our #2? Tulsa earned a 78/100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index, which tied with our winning city listed below. Tulsa has the highest average and median incomes in Oklahoma, $64,000 and $49,000, respectively. Tulsa’s cost of living is 87.9%, which makes it average for Oklahoma. Home values are on the lower side at $210,000. Rents are the second lowest in Oklahoma at $1,273 a month.

Which Oklahoma city is the winner for the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly city? Oklahoma City or OKC! Why? OKC’s HRC MEI is 78, which ties with Tulsa. OKC’s tied for second for average and median incomes, $62,000 and $48,0000, respectively. OKC’s cost of living is the second lowest at 85.8%. Home values are in the middle at $213,000. Rents are in the middle at $1,309 a month, just a bit better than Tulsa for home values and rents.

What makes Oklahoma City great for LGBTQ+ people? OKC’s a vibrant, metropolitan city with many of the amenities you want, including several museums, a science museum, a zoo, botanical gardens, several parks, and a wildlife refuge. The Northwest 39th Entertainment District, also known as The Strip, is where most of the nightlife, including the gay scene, is. The Strip is also the host of the OKC Pride Parade and Festival, which is usually the last weekend in June. Also, the District Hotel is the country’s largest gay-only hotel on the Strip!

We felt it was important to give an honorable mention to Norman, Oklahoma. Norman is a southern suburb of OKC and home to the main campus of the University of Oklahoma. Why does Norman deserve an honorable mention for the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly city in Oklahoma? Well, being the only Oklahoma city to earn a 100 on HRC’s MEI, it’s the most LGBTQ+ friendly city in Oklahoma. It also comes in second for both average and median incomes at $62,000 and $48,000, respectively. Norman’s cost of living is also second for Oklahoma at 90.3%. Norman has the second-highest home values at $236,000 on average and the third-highest rent at $1,333 monthly, over $600 below the national average.

Congratulations, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Norman!
