Which city in Oregon is the runner-up for the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city? Portland!

Why?

Portland is one of two cities in Oregon to get 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. Its median and average incomes are third for reviewed cities, $63,000 and $84,000, respectively. Rent prices are also third at $1,866 a month, which is just below the national average. Some issues with Portland are that it does have the highest cost of living of the cities we could analyze at 154.6% of the national average, and home values are toward the bottom at $525,000.

Which city in Oregon is the winner for most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city? Eugene!

Why?

Eugens also scored a 100 on HRC’s MEI. Rents are second lowest in the state at $1,837 a month, just slightly below Portland. Home values are also the second lowest of cities reviewed at $430,000, almost $100,000 below that of Portland. The cost of living is in the middle at 135.8% of the national average. Median and average incomes are also both second to last in Eugene at $50,000 and $68,000, respectively.

Great things about gay Eugene include that it’s nestled in the Willamette Valley between Skinner Butte, Spencer Butte, and the Coburgh Hills. Eugene is great for outdoorsy people hiking, cycling through gorgeous woods, kayaking, and rafting on nearby lakes and rivers. Eugene is also often listed as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the US. Eugene prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing, employment, and public access in 1977, followed by the prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation for state employment in 1987. Eugene was listed as the 12th Queerest City in 2016 by Advocate. It’s home of the University of Oregon, which was listed as the top LGBTQ+ campus in 2018 by both BestColleges.com and Campus Pride. Eugene’s Pride is in August each year.
