What’s the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly City in New York? Let’s find out.
What New York State city is the runner-up for most affordable and LGBTQ+-friendly? Yonkers!
Why? Yonkers is one of three cities in New York State with a 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. Yonkers is tied for #1 with the highest median and average incomes, $70,000 and $99,000, respectively, the highest we’ve had so far in this series. Yonkers’ cost of living is the second highest in the state at 176.7%. Home values and rents are on the bottom half at $596,000 and $2,314 a month, respectively.
What New York State city is the winner for most affordable and LGBTQ+-friendly? Rochester!
Why? It’s also one of three cities in New York State with a 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. Average incomes are on the lower end at $72,000 a year. The median income is last in the state at $55,000. However, Rochester’s cost of living is the lowest in New York State at 79.1%. Home values are toward the bottom at $212,000 on average. Rents are also toward the bottom at $1,366 a month on average.
What are some great things about Rochester? Rochester is New York State’s third largest city, just off the Finger Lakes region and Lake Ontario. The Park Avenue corridor of Rochester’s downtown is the “gay area” with dining, drinking, entertainment, historic sites, museums, galleries, shopping, and theater. Rochester has many gay and lesbian groups and many LGBTQ+ events year-round. Pride 2023 is the weekend of 07/15 to compete with New York City’s Pride.
