What are the top 5 most expensive LGBTQ-friendly cities?
On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the top 5 most expensive LGBTQ-friendly cities on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series.
Coming in at #5, we have Chula Vista, California, a suburb of San Diego. Chula Vista has the highest rent for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment at $3,174 a month. It is tied for the highest cost of living at 154.9%. Chula Vista has the highest average income at $74,000 annually. The gay bars include Pecs, a “low-key gay bar & pool place.
Coming in at #4 is Oceanside, California, another suburb of San Diego. It has the highest home value at $810,000. Oceanside was tied with Chula Vista for the highest cost of living at 154.9%. Oceanside has the highest median income at $57,000. If you are in the Oceanside area the BTW Oceanside is the local bar to hit up.
Miami, Florida, comes in at #3. It has the lowest cost of living, at 118.9%, and the lowest median income, at $41,000. Miami ranks high among cities for singles and is a culturally and architecturally significant city.
Riverside, California, came in at #2 on our list. Riverside has the lowest rent at $2,435 a month. The cost of living is 131.2%. Riverside has the lowest average income at $58,000. Check out riversidepride.org for more info on their Pride event and year-round events in the area.
It is worth noting that all 455 of the cities we looked at had a cost of living well above the national average. Only one city had home values below the national average, and only two had median incomes just barely above the national average. All the cities in the top 25 most expensive were from blue states, with the exception of #3, Miami, Florida.
We have 5 honorable mentions. Los Angeles, California, came in at #7. Hoboken, New Jersey, came in at #10. New York City, New York, came in at #18. San Francisco, California, came in at #21, and West Hollywood, California, came in at #23.
Cathedral City, California, is ranked #1. It is a suburb of Palm Springs and has the lowest home values at $485,000. The cost of living is 131.2%. Cathedral City has the second lowest median and average incomes at $42,000 and $59,000. Cathedral City was the LGBTQ hot spot before Palm Springs took it over. It is home to several gay bars, including One Eleven & Barracks. It is considered a more affordable retirement option being more affordable than Palm Springs, especially if you must work.
