What are the top 5 most affordable LGBTQ+-friendly large cities?
On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the 5 most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly large cities on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, comes in at #5. Pittsburgh has the highest cost of living in the top 5, at 94.7%, and the highest average income, at $76,000. Pittsburgh came in at #2 for affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly, and climate change-ready cities while coming in at #3 for the most affordable cities for LGBTQ+ singles. It was the runner-up for the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly city in Pennsylvania, behind Erie, Pennsylvania.
Rochester, New York, came in at the #4th spot. Rochester is a trans-friendly city and came in at #1 for most affordable cities for LGBTQ+ singles.
Coming in at the #3 spot is Covington, Kentucky. Covington has the highest rents on this list, at $1,475 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, and the lowest home values, at $186,000. Covington is the winner for the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city in Kentucky. Covington came in at #2 for the most affordable LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the red states.
Coming in at the #2 spot is Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland has the lowest cost of living on this list, at 77.2%. Cleveland has the lowest median and average incomes from the top 5 list at $53,000 and $71,000, respectively. Cleveland is the winner for being the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly state in the purple states. Cleveland came in #2 for most affordable cities for LGBTQ+ singles and made the #4th spot for most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly, and climate change ready.
It is worth noting that 55 of the 126 large cities scored 100 on the HRC MEI, and 37 cities have the cost of living below the national average.
We have three honorable mentions. Louisville, Kentucky, came in at #10; Richmond, Virginia, came in at #12; and St Paul, Minnesota, came in at #20.
Coming in at #1 is Milwaukee. Milwaukee has the lowest rents on this list at $1,193 a month for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment. It has the highest home value at $288,000. It has the highest median income at $57,000. Milwaukee came in at #1 for the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the blue states, #6 for the most affordable cities for LGBTQ+ singles, and #1 for the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly cities prepped for climate change
