What are the top 5 most affordable LGBTQ+-friendly small cities?
On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the 5 most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly small cities on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series.
Morgantown, West Virginia, comes in at #5. Morgantown has the most expensive rent for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment at $1,291 monthly. Morgantown is tied for the highest cost of living at 90.3%. It came in at #5 for red states on our Queer Money® episode #501. Morgantown scored honorable mention for West Virginia on Queer Money® episode #387.
Columbia, Missouri, came in at the #4th spot. Columbia has the highest home values at $261,000. Columbia tied with Morgantown for cost of living at 90.3%. Columbia came in #4 for red states and is the runner-up for Missouri on Queer Money® episode #435.
Coming in at the #3 spot is Dubuque, Iowa. Dubuque has the lowest rents at $879 a month for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment. Dubuque also has the lowest median and average incomes at $46,000 and $58,000.
Coming in at the #2 spot is Champagne, Illinois. Champagne has the lowest home value at $195,000. Champagne has the highest average income at $70,000, and it was the runner-up for Illinois Queer Money® episode #459.
It is worth noting that of the 93 small cities, 11 of them scored 100 on the HRC MEI.
We have three honorable mentions. Lawrence, Kansas, came in at #12 due to their middle incomes, lower than average cost of living, home values, and rents. Lawrence is home to the University of Kansas. Lawrence scored 100 on the HRC MEI. State College Pennsylvania came in at #14 with an HRC MEI of 100. They are decent on their average medium incomes. P-Town Massachussets came in at #20. P-Town is considerably more expensive but has some of the highest incomes on the list. P-Town scored 100 on the HRC MEI.
Coming in at #1 is Racine, Wisconsin. Racine has the lowest cost of living at 80.4%. Racine has the highest median income at $51,000. Racine was the winner of Wisconsin Queer Money® episode #385.
