What are the top 5 most affordable LGBTQ+-friendly small towns?
On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the 5 most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly small towns on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series.
Vermillion, South Dakota, is ranked #5. It has the highest rents on our top 5 list at $1,250 a month for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment. Vermillion has an above-average home value and cost of living. Vermillion has an HRC MEI of 82. Vermillion was the runner-up for South Dakota on our Queer Money® episode #401. It sits on the Minnesota border and is known for the University of South Dakota.
Laramie, Wyoming, came in at the #4th spot. Laramie has the highest home value at $338,000. It has the highest cost of living at 92.8%. Laramie has the highest average income at $58,000. Laramie came in at 89 on the HRC MEI, which is up from 77 in 2022. Laramie was the winner for Wyoming on our Queer Money® episode #383. It is home to the University of Wyoming. They have an Annual Rendevouz Campout between Laramie & Cheyanne.
Frankfurt, Kentucky, comes in at the #3 spot. Frankfurt has the highest median income at $48,000; otherwise, it is really cheap. It scored a 66 on the HRC MEI.
Coming in at the #2 spot is Brookings, South Dakota. Brookings has an average to above average for rents, home values and cost of living. Bookings is the only small town on our top 5 list to score 100 on the HRC MEI. Brookings was the winner for South Dakota on our Queer Money® episode #401.
It is worth noting that 2 out of the 24 small towns scored 100 on the HRC MEI.
We have three honorable mentions. Rutland, Vermont, came in at #7, with below-average rents and cost of living. Rutland has an above-average median income. Juneau, Arkansas, came in at #8 with the highest median income at $61,000 and the highest average income at $74,000. Juneau scored a 100 on the HRC MEI. Pullman, Washington came in at #14 and is one of the only few towns in a blue state. Pullman is a sister town with. Moscow, Idaho. Pullman has two different colleges, the University of Idaho and the Pullman campus of Washington State University.
Coming in at #1 is Emporia, Kansas. Emporia has the lowest rents, at $666 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment. It also has the lowest cost of living, at 74.6%. It also has the lowest median income, at $40,000, and the lowest average income, at $50,000. Emporia scored a 69 on the HRC MEI.
