On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the 5 most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly cities for in red states on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series. 

Morgantown, West Virginia, comes in at #5. Morgantown is in the northern part of West Virginia, close to the Pennsylvania border. The cost of living is 90.3% of the national average, tied for the highest on our top 5 list.

Coming in at #4 is Columbia, Missouri. Columbia’s home values average $262,000, the most expensive of the top 5. The cost of living is 90.3% of the national average, tied for the highest of the top 5.

Huntington, West Virginia, came in at #3. Huntington has an average of $870 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, the lowest of the top 5. Huntington’s home values average $114,000, the lowest of the top 5. The cost of living is 97% of the national average, the lowest on the top 5 list. It has a median income of $37,000 annually and an average income of $54,000, both the lowest on our top 5 list.  Huntington, West Virginia, came in at #37 out of 177 cities for most affordable cities for LGBTQ+ singles.

Covington, Kentucky, a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio, came in at #2. Covington has an average of $1,475 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, the highest of the top 5. It has a median income of $57,000 annually and an average income of $75,000, both the highest on our top 5 list. 

It is worth noting that of the 185 blue cities in red states that we analyzed, 28 red states had 28 cities with 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Quality Index.

We have three honorable mentions to share. Lexington, Kentucky, came in at #9. Lexington was recently highlighted on NBCnews.com as a great city for the transgender community. San Antonio, Texas, came in at #11 and has a large Latino  LGBTQ+ population   Bloomington, Indiana, came in at #13, with a lower cost of living and higher-than-average incomes. 

St. Louis, Missouri, is #1 on our list. St. Louis has an average of $1,208 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment. St. Louis’ home values average $160,000 per property.  The cost of living is 87.7% of the national average. St Louis, Missouri, has a median income average of $51,000. The average income is $63,000. Not the top in any of these categories, but came in second and third in all but two categories.
