What’s the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly City in New Hampshire? Let’s find out.

To set the tone for this week’s review, no city in New Hampshire scored 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. No city has a cost of living below 100%. Also, US Census data is unavailable for much of New Hampshire. So, as usual, we switched to using household income from Point2Homes rather than individual income from the UC Cense.

That said, what’s the runner-up for the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly city in New Hamshire? Manchester!

Why? Manchester scores an 86 on HRC MEI. Home values average $370,000 per property, which is in the bottom quartile. Rents average $1,694 monthly, also in the bottom quartile. The cost of living in Manchester is 121.4% and on the low side. The average income is $82, 000 a year and is also on the low side. Median income averages $67,000 annually and is also on the lower side.

What’s the winner for the most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly city in New Hamshire? Durham!

Why? Durham scored a 92 on HRC’s MEI. Home values average $572,000 per property, the second highest in New Hampshire. Rents average $1,695 a month for a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment, which is toward the middle of New Hampshire. The cost of living in Durham is 130.5%. The average household income is $105,000 annually, the highest in the state. Median household income is $89,000 annually, the second highest in New Hampshire.

What are some really neat things about Durham? Durham is a picturesque city with many parks, including nature refuges, trails, water features, and waterfalls at Packers Falls Park. Durham’s the home of the University of New Hampshire, central to Durham. University of New Hampshire’s LGBTQ+ group Alliance meets weekly during the school year. Durham’s also great for fishing, swimming, skiing, snowboarding, and star gazing from its observatory.

So, congratulations Manchester and Durham!
