Which city is this week’s winner in West Virginia?

As a recap, we’re using these 6 metrics

  1. HRC Municipal Equality Index = 5x weight
  2. Zillow’s ZORI = 1x weight
  3. Zillow’s ZHVI = 1x weight
  4. HH income median = 1x weight
  5. HH income mean = 1x weight
  6. BestPlaces.net Cost of Living

This week’s honorable mention goes to Morgantown West Virginia. It’s the only West Virginia city to get 100 HRC MEI. It also ranks #1 for average and median household incomes, but it’s dead last for rent affordability, home values, and cost of living – which keeps it from the top spot. So . . . . it’s gay-friendly but not the most affordable.

Who’s this week’s winner? Charleston West Virginia, one of the 2019 Queer Money Live Tour stops.

Why?

It’s #1 for rent and home values affordability, in the middle for average and median household incomes, and #2 for the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipality Equality Index.

It’s not #1 on the HRC MEI because the city doesn’t have trans-inclusive healthcare or domestic partner benies, though it ranks well for everything else.

Finally, in terms of affordability, it’s second to last for the cost of living for the five cities included in our review but 81% of the national average

A few highlights about Charleston West Virginia include its thriving Pride organization and that its annual Pride boasts over 1,000 attendees each year. Of course, Charleston is West Virginia’s largest city and its state capital. Its Pride, called Rainbow Pride, is June 3, 2023.
