On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the 5 most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly cities for in purple states on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series. 

Dayton, Ohio, comes in at #5. Dayton, Ohio’s home values average $106,000 per property, the lowest on our top five list and the lowest of all the 35 cities. The cost of living is 83.8% of the national average. The average income is $66,000, the least of the top 5 list.

Coming in at #4 is Davenport, Iowa. Davenport has an average of $862 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, the lowest of the top 5 and the second lowest of all the 35 cities. Davenport’s home values average $170,000, the second lowest of the top 5. The cost of living is 82.9% of the national average, the second lowest of the top 5. Davenport, Iowa, has a median income of $47,000,  the lowest of the top 5. 

Akron, Ohio, came in at #3. Akron has an average of $1,117 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, the second lowest of the top 5. The cost of living is 97.5% of the national average, the highest on the top 5 list. Akron has a median income of $57,000 annually, the second highest on our top 5 list. Akron, Iowa, came in at #68 out of 177 cities for most affordable cities for LGBTQ+ singles.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, came in at #2. Its cost of living is 81.8%, the second-lowest of the top 5.

It is worth noting that of all the blue states we analyzed, 35 blue cities are in purple states. Purple states have a total of 19 cities with 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Quality Index, which is more than half.

We have five honorable mentions to share. Toledo, Ohio, came in at #20. Shout out to the folks in Toledo downloading the Queer Money® podcast. Fort Lauderdale, Florida, came in at #14 and was carried by high average incomes. Wilton Manors, Florida, came in at #13, with high average and median incomes. Tampa, Florida, came in at #11 and also carried by high average and median incomes. Columbus, Ohio, came in at #7, with higher-than-average median incomes and below averages for monthly home values and rent prices. 

Cleveland, Ohio, is #1 on our list. Cleveland has an average of $1,321 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, the highest of the top 5. Cleveland’s home values average $202 per property, the highest of the top 5. The cost of living is 77.2% of the national average, the lowest of the top 5, and the third lowest of all 35 cities in all three states. Clevlenad’s median income averages $53,000, the highest of the top 5. The average income is $71,000, the highest of the top 5.
