10 best states for gay retirees

On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the top 10 best states for gay retirees. Where can we live that is better for us, whether that’s a place to go to college, a city with protections, or states that historically have been on our side? We break down the top 10 states based on several factors. This will help you formulate an idea of where you may want to retire.

The top 10 states for gay folks. We had a tie, so both came in at number nine. The first number nine position is Rhode Island. According to Equaldex, they rank it at 5th place for the most LGBTQ+ friendly states. According to the Movement  Advancement Project, Rhode Island ranked as the 24th state for LGBTQ+ friendliest. According to HRC, the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Quality Index, only one city within Rhode Island scored 100. There are three notable cities: Providence, Pawtucket, and East Providence.

New Jersey is also coming in at number nine and tying with Rhode Island. Equaldex gives it the ninth-best state or territory for LGBTQ people, and the Movement Advancement Project ranks it as the 20th best state or territory. Five cities in New Jersey got a 100 on the HRC, the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Quality Index. Three notable cities are Jersey City, Montclair, and Hoboken.

The three tools we are using to help rank these cities are the Equaldex ranking of the state or territory, The Movement Advancement Project (or MAP) ranking of the state or territory, and the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Quality Index( or HRC) whether or not HRC marks this state as a state that is in a state of emergency based on laws it has passed or trying to pass. This list is based on these rankings and does not have a financial overlay like the previous lists we did. We are purely ranking the friendliest of the States and cities.

New Mexico comes in at number eight. Equaldex ranks it at number 19, and MAP ranks it at number eight. According to the HRC MEI, one state ranks at 100. Three notable cities are Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Santa Fe.

Coming in at number seven is not actually a state but a US territory: Washington, D.C. Equaldex ranks it as the 15th best territory, and MAP ranks it as the sixth best. HRC MEI does not have a ranking for Washington, D.C., so there is no information there. It is the Nation’s capitol and has the highest density of LGBTQ+ in any city.

Maryland is ranked sixth. Equaldex ranked it the eleventh-best state or territory for  LGBTQ+ folks, and MAP ranked it fourth. Six cities have a 100 on the HRC MEI. Three notable cities are Columbia, Frederick, and Baltimore.

Coming in at number five is Connecticut. Equaldex ranks it at number three, and MAP ranks it at number ten. According to HRC MEI, two cities score 100. Three notable cities are Norwalk, Stamford, and Hartford.

Coming in at number four is California. Equaldex ranks it at number seven.  MAP ranks it number two. There are eighteen cities that scored a 100 on the HRC MEI. Three notable cities especially for retirees are Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and West Hollywood.

Coming in at number three is Massachusetts. Equaldex ranks it at number one. MAP gives it a seventh ranking. According to HRC MEI there are seven cities with a rating of 100. Three notable cities are Worcester,  Northampton and Provincetown.

Coming in at number two is Colorado. Equaldex ranks it at number six. MAP ranks it at number one. There are three cities with 100 HRC MEI.  Three notable cities are Denver,  Ft. Collins, and Boulder.

And taking the number one spot is New Hampshire. Equaldex ranks it number two. MAP ranks it at number two. There are no cities with a 100 on HRC MEI. Maybe there isn’t a city with a 100 because of the protections and laws they do so well that are state-wide for LGBTQ rights that the cities don’t necessarily feel they need to pass those. Three notable cities are Durham, Manchester and Dover.
