On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing 10 of the most affordable LGBTQ+ friendly cities for homebuyers on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series.
Coming in at #10 is Rockford, Illinois, on our list of affordable LGBTQ+ friendly cities for homebuyers. Rockford home values average about $145,000 per property. The cost of living is 79%, tied for the lowest in the top 10 list. Rockford’s median income for individuals is $43,000 per year. It takes 3.33 times the median income to be able to afford an average home. The average Income for individuals is $55,000 per year, and it takes 2.63 times the average income of an individual to buy the average house in Rockford.
Baltimore, Maryland, comes in at #9. Home values average about $179,000 per property. The median income for individuals is $53,000 per year. It takes 3.39 times the median income to buy a typical home in Baltimore. The average income for individuals is $73,000 per year, and it takes 2.56 times the average income to buy a typical home in Baltimore.
Coming in at #8 is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The home values are $193,000 per property, which is the highest on the top 10 list. The cost of living is 94.7%, the highest on the top 10 list. The median income for individuals is $57,000 per year. It takes 3.38 times the median income to buy a typical home in Pittsburgh. The average income for individuals is $76,000 per year. It takes 2.54 times the average income to buy a typical home in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has the highest median and average incomes on the top 10 list.
Coming in at #7 is St. Louis, Missouri, on our list of affordable LGBTQ+ friendly cities for homebuyers.. Home values average about $160,000 per property in St. Louis. The median income for individuals is $51,000 per year. It takes 3.12 times the median income to buy a typical home in St. Louis. St. Louis has an average income for individuals of $63,000 per year, and it takes 2.53 times the average income to buy a typical home there.
Coming in at #6 is Covington, Kentucky. Covington home values average about $186,000 per property. The median income for individuals is $57,000 per year. It takes 3.26 times the median income to buy an average home in Covington. The average income for individuals is $75,000 per year and it takes 2.47 times the average income to buy an average home in Covington.
Coming in at #5 is Syracuse, New York. The average home value is about $158,000 per property in Syracuse. The median income for individuals is $55,000 per year. It takes 2.87 times the median income to buy the average home in Syracuse. The average income for individuals is $69,000 per year, and it takes 2.28 times the average income to buy a typical home in Syracuse.
Coming in at #4 is Huntington, West Vermont, on our list of affordable LGBTQ+ friendly cities for homebuyers.. Home values average about $114,000 per property in Huntington. The cost of living is 79%, which is tied for the lowest on the top 10 list. The median income for individuals is $37,000 per year. It takes 3.05 times the median income to buy a typical home in Huntington. The average income for individuals is $54,000 per year, and it takes 2.11 times the average income to buy a typical home there. Huntington has the lowest median income on the top 10 list.
Birmingham, Alabama, comes in at #3. The average home value is about $105,000 per property. The median income for individuals is $40,000 per year. It takes 2.59 times the median income to buy a typical home in Birmingham. The average income for individuals is $51,000 per year, and it takes 2.04 times the average income to buy a typical home in Birmingham. It has the lowest average income on the top 10 list.

Coming in at #2 is Dayton, Ohio. The home values are $106,000 per property in Dayton. The median income for individuals is $52,000 per year. It takes 2.05 times the median income to buy a home in Dayton. The average income for individuals is $66,000 per year, and it takes 1.61 times the average income to buy a home in Dayton. Dayton is less than 45 minutes away from Cincinnati, with a thriving queer scene with restaurants and bars in several neighborhoods.
Coming in at #1 – Detroit, Michigan, on our list of affordable LGBTQ+ friendly cities for homebuyers. The home values are $68,000 per property, the lowest in the top 10. The median income for individuals is $40,000 per year. It takes 1.69 times the median income to buy a home in Detroit, the lowest of all 455 cities. The average income for individuals is $52,000 per year, and it takes 1.29 times the average income to buy a home in Detroit. That is the lowest out of all 455 cities. Many pockets in Detroit are experiencing revitalization, with folks moving into homes/neighborhoods once considered less desirable and fixing them up.
