How money can buy you 5 freedoms
On this episode of the Queer Money® Podcast, we discuss five freedoms that money can buy. We know money doesn’t buy happiness, but it does buy one thing that can make you happy: freedom. We want to get specific on the exact freedoms it can buy and pay attention to #5 because we’ve recently added this one, and it’s vital for queer folks.
The first freedom money can buy is financial freedom. You don’t have to stress out all the time like so many others in the LGBTQ+ community do. 58% – 60% of LGBTQ+ folks worry about money daily or weekly; you don’t have to be one of them. We stress less about retirement because we built our retirement nest egg.
The second freedom money can buy is location freedom. You don’t have to email us and ask, “Where’s a cheap place to live that is also LGBTQ+ friendly? You can find a place to live and work that aligns with your values. This allowed us to live in Spain for 3 months and take breaks from work when we wanted, not according to a set work requirement. Many of you might remember that we were fortunate enough to do our Podcast from Spain, so thank you to Capital One.
The third freedom money can buy is time freedom. You can do what you want with your time. You do not have to work multiple jobs or do lots of overtime. You own your time vs. a boss owning your time. We were able to spend time with friends dealing with cancer and took a month-long honeymoon in 2018.
The fourth freedom money can buy is relationship freedom. You have the time and money to love on the folks you want to love whether that be platonic or sexy time love. We can spend time with family and friends in other states because we can choose how we use our time.
The fifth freedom money can buy is you freedom. You have the money to live your life the way you want and look the way you want without having a boss, neighbors, or family get their political panties in a wad because they are concerned you don’t fit in. You can really focus on you and being who you truly are without worrying that it will impact your job or your personal safety. We no longer feel the need to live up to some expectations for an employer, or “friends” or for folks in the LGBTQ+ just to win their approval.
How do you make this happen? One, know what you really need to be financially independent. Two, Create a plan. Three, find a community of others who also think this is important. Four, work your plan. Five, Get started with the 9-point checklist in the Queer Money® Kickstarter with the link below.
Your Queer Money® takeaway is right here. Take some time to think about what each of these freedoms would mean for you. Then pick one and make it your North Star for working towards financial independence.
