On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the most affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly cities for dog owners affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series. We list the 10 most affordable cities for LGBTQ+ folks with dogs. We used Forbes Advisors’ list of the Best Cities for Dogs 2024.

Number ten is Portland, Oregon. Portland, Oregon, is not typically considered affordable, but it did great on dog-ranking. Portland came in the runner-up position on Queer Money Episode # 409, on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in Oregon. It was the 3rd highest in median income at $ 63,000. We all know that taking care of your dogs is expensive.

Number nine is Denver, Colorado. Denver, Colorado, is also not typically considered affordable, but it did great on dog-ranking. Denver was the winner of Queer Money episode # 473 on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in Colorado. It ranked the 2nd highest median for average incomes at $67,000 and $89,000 a year, respectively. Denver is our home state. The average is 22.1 dogs per 100 hoomans.

Number eight is St Petersburg, Florida. St. Petersburg Florida ranked in at a State of Emergency per the HRC MEI. St. Petersberg tied for the number two position with Tampa on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in Florida on our Queer Money episode #467. In St. Petersberg, 26.7% of the population identify as Hispanic/Latino, 21.8% as Black/African American, and 13.7% as 2+ races.

Number seven is Tampa, Florida.  Tampa, Florida, also ranked as a State of Emergency per HRC MEI. As we mentioned above, it tied with St. Petersburg. We enjoyed our time there and love Ybor. It has the same US Census statistical area as St. Petersberg.

Number six is Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta, Georgia, is yet another one to be ranked at a State of Emergency per HRC MEI. Atlanta is not typically considered affordable, but it did great on this dog-ranking list.  Atlanta was the runner-up on Queer Money episode # 465, on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in Georgia. It has the highest average and median incomes at $70,000 for median and $105,000 for average. There are lots of Black/African American people. One of our favorite neighbors, whose son hired us to speak at Verisk, lives there.

Number five is Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore, Maryland, has the lowest ranking on Forbes’ top 25 list, however, we list it at number five on our list due to its affordability. It would’ve been runner-up on Queer Money episode # 445, on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in Maryland, had we not included DC as part of Maryland as HRC did. It came in at the lowest, ranking the number one spot for cost of living at 91.3%. It also ranked the lowest, coming in at the number ten spot for home values at $179,000. We gave a 2019 Queer Money Live Tour talk in Baltimore, Maryland. They have a very diverse population.

Number four is Chicago, Illinois.  Chicago, Illinois, is not typically considered affordable, but it did great on dog-ranking. Chicago came in number three position on Queer Money episode # 459 on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in Illinois. It has the 3rd highest average income at $87,000. It ranked the 2nd lowest for home values at $291,000. We held our Queer Money Bingo! Workshop for ROMBA there last year. Chicago has a very diverse population. They have an average number of 22.2 dogs per 100 hoomans.

Number three is Richmond, Virginia. Richmond, Virginia, came in as number 23 on the Forbes list; however, it made our number three due to affordability. It was the winner of Queer Money episode # 391 on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in Virginia. It ranked as number three for the cheapest rent at $1,549. Richmond has a diverse population; 44% identify as African American/Black.

Number two is Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque, New Mexico, was the winner on Queer Money episode # 421 on Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly Cities in New Mexico. Albuquerque ranked at number two for the cheapest rent at $1,486. It ranked as the 3rd lowest for home values at  $308,000. Albuquerque has a High Latino population.

Number one is Madison, Wisconsin.  Madison, Wisconsin, came in at number three on Queer Money episode # 385 Most Affordable, LGBTQ-friendly City in Wisconsin. Madison has the cheapest rent at $1,455/mo. There are 12,503 registered dogs within Madison’s city limits. This number does not include suburbs. Madison offers nine fenced-in, off-leash dog park areas within its city limits.

Some privileges are financial, racial, gender expression, and health or well-being.
