What are 7 most affordable and diverse cities for queer people in America?

On this Queer Money®, we’re sharing the 7 of the most affordable and diverse cities for LGBTQ+ people on our affordable, LGBTQ+-friendly city series. 

Coming in at #7 is Syracuse, New York. According to Niche.com’s ranking, Syracuse comes in at #57. Syracuse has the lowest home prices at $158,000. It also has the lowest avgerage income at $69,000 a year.  Syracuse is a racially diverse city; 51% are non-white, 27% are African American, and 10% are Hispanic.

Tampa, Florida, is ranked #6. According to Niche.com’s ranking, Tampa is ranked #18. Tampa has the highest average home price, at $391,000. It also has the highest rents, at $2,245 a month for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom average apartment. Tampa is racially diverse; 56% are non-white, 27% are Hispanic, and 21% are African American.

Coming in at #5 is Dallas, Texas. According to Niche.com’s ranking, it is ranked at #24. Dallas has racial diversity: 72% are non-white, 42% are Hispanic, and 23% are African American.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, came in at #4. According to Niche.com’s ranking, Philadelphia ranked #14. It has the highest median income, at $64,000 a year. The racial diversity is 66% non-white, 39% African American, and 16% Hispanic.

Chicago, Illinois, is ranked #3. According to Niche.com’s ranking, Chicago is ranked #10. Chicago has the highest average income, at $87,000 a year. The cost of living is slightly higher than the national average, at 105.7%. Chicago’s racial diversity is 67% non-white, 29% Hispanic, and 28% African American. Last week, Chicago was also #3 for best cities for young LGBTQ+ professionals. 

It is worth noting that the most diverse city, according to Niche.com, was Vallejo, California. The racial diversity there is broken down with 77% being non-white, 29% are Hispanic, 18% are African American, and 22% are Asian. Why isn’t it on our list? Vallejo is unaffordable and scored 81st position on our list. We have three honorable mentions. Sacramento, California, came in at #8 on our list and #3 on Niche.com. New York City came in at #9 on our list and #2 on Niche.com. Paradise, Nevada, came in at #15 on our list, which is the uber-gay area of Las Vegas, and #9 on Niche.com.

Coming in at #2 is Rochester, New York. Rochester ranked #27 according to Niche.com’s ranking. It has the lowest median income at $55,000 a year. It also has the lowest cost of living at 79.1% of the national average. Rochester is racially diverse, having 64% non-white, 20% Hispanic, and 36% African American. 

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is #1 on our list of the top 7 most affordable and diverse cities for LGBTQ+ people. According to Niche.com’s ranking, Milwaukee ranked #21. It has the lowest rents, at $1,193 a month for an average two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. Milwaukee is racially diverse, with 67% being non-white, 38% African American, and 20% Hispanic.
